BETTERTON REAL ESTATE

Betterton Homes and Land for Sale

Located on the upper Chesapeake Bay, at the mouth of the Sassafras River, Betterton was founded as a fishing village in the mid 1700s.  A century later, with the coming of the steamboat, Betterton evolved into a thriving beach resort.  Remnants of the hotels and summer cottages still provide an interesting architectural variety to the streetscape.  Read more about Betterton

Betterton Information

Betterton is located about 15-miles from Historic Chestertown.  When it was incorporated in 1906, Betterton was a bustling and propserous commercial center.  As the century progressed, the easy water access and established hostelries made Betterton a natural summer resort for people seeking to get away from the cities. Betterton evolved into a beach resort, with arcades, amusements, restaurants, and a regular clientele. But the same location that was convenient for travel by steamship became remote and inconvenient when it became possible to travel by automobile over paved roads and the Bay Bridge to ocean beaches.

The Betterton Historic District consists of a collection of vernacular Victorian resort structures. The district includes many of the homes, hotels and cottages built to accommodate steamboat passengers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Notable buildings within the district include the hotels and boarding homes which catered to the steamboat passengers, several churches, and summer cottages, dating from the golden age of the passenger steamboats on the Chesapeake Bay.

BETTERTON BEACH WATERFRONT PARK¨ is a 5 acre landscaped, family oriented waterfront park and is the largest of two public beaches in Kent County on the Chesapeake Bay.  The park is located near the mouth of the Sassafras River at the northwest part of the county.  The exceptional sandy beach has 300 feet of frontage for swimming and 700 feet of shoreline access. ¨¨It is equipped with a bathhouse with public restrooms and 500 feet of boardwalk, with benches, lighting and handicap access. A picnic pavilion is located on a bayview bluff.  Boating is available from a public landing and pier.¨¨
