Kent Island Information

Kent Fort, the first English establishment on Kent Island was founded in 1631, making Kent Island the oldest English settlement within the present day state of Maryland. It is the third oldest permanent English settlement in the U.S. after Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts. Historic Stevensville on Kent Island was founded in 1850 as a steamboat terminal. It is a national historic district with about 100 historic structures dating back to the town’s earlier days. It is also listed n the National Register of Historic Places. For biking or walking, The Cross Island Trail is a beautiful six-mile paved trail that wanders through woods, around creeks, a wildflower meadow and marshes.

Located on the scenic Kent Narrows channel, the Chesapeake Exploration Center includes hands-on, interactive exhibits which feature artifacts and displays that tell the story of the Chesapeake Bay and the Eastern Shore region. Visitors will learn about the area from the earliest geology to man's impact on the estuary over time. Visitors can find out how the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was constructed, learn how many tons of tomatoes were processed by local canneries, discover what kinds of wildlife live in the watershed, and how we can help save the bay. .
