KENT COUNTY INFORMATION
Kent County has a strong community sensibility. There is an active community of artists, authors, musicians and crafts artisans. In Chestertown, the Garfield Center for the Arts offers an important venue for theatre, concerts and children's programs. The Main Stay in Rock Hall is a well-known venue for music entertainment. Visitors enjoy the rural landscape, walking the tree-lined streets, and visiting the shops, galleries and restaurants. Access to the Chesapeake Bay, Chester River and other waterways affords opportunities for all types of water activities and boating.
Kent County, Maryland was honored by Progressive Farmer by being selected as #1 in Best Rural Places to Live in America for 2008. The county of 20,000 residents was chosen in part because of its commitment to preserving the county's rural roots, despite being within driving distance to Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. You can choose to live in a small community, a rural setting, a condo or a home on the water.

Kent County is the second oldest county in Maryland, founded in 1642 by settlers who named it for the county they left in England. It is situated in the northern part of the Eastern Shore and is primarily rural. The topography is generally flat through the mid-section of the county with steep slopes common along the Chesapeake Bay from Betterton to Tolchester. The total county population has changed little over the last 100 years.
Chestertown is the county seat and principal municipality with a population of just over 4,000. Kent County covers approximately 179,480 land acres. The county is largely agricultural with 68%, or 122,050 acres zoned agricultural. Three hundred fourteen farms, averaging 374 acres each, comprise over 66% of Kent County's land acres. There are 5,972 acres in parks and publicly owned open space. Another 17,150 acres are in some form of permanent preservation.
Kent County Volunteer Organizations - There are many ways citizens can learn more about the area and participate in the community. The Chester River Association is committed to improving the health of the large tributary and employs "Chester Testers"Âť to collect water samples. The Echo Hill Outdoor School, situated on the bay near Betterton, and Schooner Sultana Project in Chestertown, are dedicated to environmental education and historical preservation.
