Eastern Shore Moments
The creek has been frozen for awhile and we have enjoyed seeing the ducks and geese romping around. But, it was a little more interesting this morning. We looked out and there was a magnificent Eagle out there alone in the middle. He was quite content for awhile, just sitting there, checking things out. Then he casually started walking over to the edge and disappeared into the marsh. Guess it was time to get the day rolling.

Eastern Shore - Shooting Sporting Clays in Kent County, Maryland
A few days ago there was a break in our cold snowy winter weather and it warmed to about 40 degrees. Along with two friends, Ray and Carter, we decided to enjoy it with a round of sporting clays at Hopkins Hunting and Sporting Clays. It is conveniently located in Kennedyville, a centrally located town in Kent County.
They have 28 automated stations overlooking ponds, fields, ravines, and woods. We like that you can shoot without having a guide to pull the traps. At the front desk Linda gives you an electronic device you plug into each station to throw one clay at a time, or two simultaneously. Shooting on report is also fun; that is when you shoot at the first target and as soon as the report is heard, the second target is released.

Generations of families have prospered from the fruits borne by the largest estuary in the United States. The very name, Rock Hall, is a nod to the bounty of the state fish: the striped bass or rockfish. As a result, an extensive marine infrastructure has flourished. Today this is shared by both watermen and recreational boaters alike.

Kent County: The Land of Pleasant Living, on the Eastern Shore
By Scott Budden. English settlers first explored the banks Chester River in the 17th century and the town of Chestertown was established shortly after the turn of the 18th. A trading port, the colonists became wealthy landowners who profited off the export of cash crops. This economy thrived and by the mid 19th century, Chestertown was second to only Annapolis as Maryland’s premiere port.
Today, this colonial preeminence is evident in the uneven cobble stone streets, 18th century brick farmhouses and traditional maritime vocations. Families can trace their lineages back to legendary sea captains and abolitionist leaders. The past is a very tangible presence; you are never far removed even in modernity.
