Many centuries ago, Native Americans discovered Talbot County's wealth of natural resources and profusion of waterways for ease in travel. Later European settlers were also drawn to the area. Founded in 1661, Talbot County is one of the oldest areas of European settlement in the New World. It’s history has always been linked to the water with various activities including merchant vessels trading, shipbuilding, sailing, fishing, and seafood harvesting.
Some of the more prominent towns in Talbot County are Easton, St. Michaels and Oxford. Easton is the county seat with shops lining the main streets and rich with cultural offerings and outdoor activities. The smaller, quaint town of Oxford has historical significance with the Oxford Ferry which is still in use. St. Michaels is a quaint walking town and is home to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, a wonderful museum offering tours and river cruises.
Easton is the county seat and rich with cultural offerings and outdoor activities. The Pickering Creek Audubon Center in Easton is open to the public and has four miles of walking trails,120-acres restored non-tidal wetland, bird viewing blinds, canoe or kayak water access and a Children’s Imagination Garden.
